There Is A Vast Choice When It Comes To Fish Tank Fishes

Aquarium stores will stock a wide variety of fish tank fishes. The most popular choice tends to be the tropical fishes. They are quite hardy and also breed easily. They will also find it easy to get acclimatized to the artificial aquatic environments. All that they need is the water heated to the necessary temperature.

The maintenance of fish tank fishes is not that difficult to get used to. Feeding time will consist of small black worms, dried fish flakes, small snails, frozen flakes, shrimps and clams. The feeding material is easy to location from your local pet or aquarium store. It can also be easy purchase online.

Some of the more common tropical fish tank fishes include, Arowana, Bala Sharks, Barbs, Barracuda, Betta (males and females), Catfish, Cichlids, Clown Loaches, Guppies, Mollies, Platies, Rainbow Fish, Tiger Fish (Black and White), White Clouds, and White Tip Shark Catfish.

Arowana can grow to a length of approximately 36 inches, so these fish are for very large aquariums. They are also know as the Dragon Fish, and can easily inhabit with Tinfoil Barbs and Catfish.

Bala Sharks can reach a length of 18 inches, and as it is a school fish, they should be kept in a group of at least five.

Barbs are small in size, ranging in length between 2 and 6 inches depending on species. They are colourful and active fish that are more suited for the community aquarium. This makes them one of the most popular types of tropical fish.

Barracuda can grow to a maximum size of 9 inches. However these fish are predatory by nature and tend to feed on smaller fish, and therefore should be kept with fishes that are bigger than them.

Cichlids can grow up to 12 inches, and otherwise know as Angel Fish. This fish can equally grow in both freshwater and saltwater fish tanks, and come in very attractive colours.

Guppies can grow up to approximately 1.5 inches and again this type of fish is one of the most popular fish species in the world.

Rainbows are another variety of fish tank fishes. They are another attractively coloured fish, and make ideal companions for Mollies, Platies, Swordtails and Catfish.

Scavengers and Catfish are important fish tank fishes incorporate in your aquarium as they help in cleaning the tank by feeding on algae.

No fish tank is ever complete without Gold Fish and Koi. The Gold fish which includes Orandas, Fantails, Telescopes and Black Moors can make excellent fish. They will grow well in fish tanks and are also mild tempered, and can have a life span of around 20 years.

The Koi are beautiful fish that are only really suited for the larger aquariums. This is due to the fact that most of them will grow to 15 inches or more and have an average life span of some 15 to 20 years.

Question by Jenna: Has anyone ever used or own the biUbe or biOrb fish aquariums?
I would really like to buy the biUbe fish aquarium. It’s very attractive and seems sturdy and space friendly. My main concern is the loudness of the pump. I don’t want to buy another aquarium, and get it home and it sounds like a damned bulldozer. Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

I would never buy either of those. To me they are just really expensive bowls and if I’m going to spend that much money I would rather spend it on a nice tank.

Sometimes you just don’t have a choice and you are forced to find a new home for your fish, whether that new home is another person’s tank or the sewer. Here is a list of options you have for getting rid of your fish from your large fish tank.

Find a friend to take your fish

If you have a friend that has a fish tank ask him or her what size and type of fish he keeps. If he has a tank with other fish that would be compatible with his, ask if they would be willing to take your fish. If you have very small fish and your friend has larger carnivorous ones, it may sound cruel, but you could give them to your friend as food. Live fish are great protein for other fish and it is better than flushing them down the toilet. If you have really nice fish you could charge but you probably shouldn’t since your friend is taking them off your hands.

Bring them to a fish store

Many fish stores will take back any fish you have bought from them or even if you haven’t bought the fish from their store they may give you store credit if you bring them healthy fish. Make sure you have a large container to transport them and that you call ahead to the store to let them know what fish you are bringing so they can prepare their tanks for the new arrivals.

Post an advertisement in the paper or craigslist

If you don’t have any friends that can take your fish post an advertisement in the paper or on craigslist for anyone interested in taking your fish. Specify exactly what type of fish you have and how large they are so you can find someone who will take them off your hands so you don’t have to kill them. You are sure to find someone that will gladly take your fish but many people are weary of other people’s fish bringing disease to their tank so try keep your tank and fish in top condition.

my tank just cleaned

i had a problem earlier, well actually for the past couple days… my big orange fish "tickles jr" was just sitting on the bottom of the tank, not moving. i didn’t know what was wrong since my levels were normal. nitrates at 6.6 and ammonia at near 0. it’s really hard to get a goldfish tank at 0 ammonia all the time, as they are SO messy!! i thought about taking half the gravel out to help the problem, their "pooping" problem, but that won’t help much i don’t think. i tried to read online as to why my goldie was sitting on the bottom of the tank, but i could never find a solution that helped. the water was a wee bit warmer than normal, but that shouldn’t cause him to just sit there for a long time. he would come to the surface when i would come over to the tank, so i knew that was a good sign. i decided to feed him some peas (thinking maybe he was constipated) and that perked him up a bit, as you can see by this photo here…

i even went to petsmart to get some vacation food (i will be going out of town this sunday for a week) so i decided to ask the girl that worked there if she knew what was wrong with my fish. of course she had no clue. "i’m sorry ma’am, i really don’t know" how could you not help me and you work in a pet store?!? why do those stores always hire people that don’t have any idea about fish? geez.

but anyway, he seems to be doing ok now…

Freshwater Fish Tank Design Ideas: The Biotope Aquarium

Whether you are starting your first aquarium or the next in a long line it helps significantly to have an idea of the fish tank design before you actually get going. The design includes: what types of fish are going in it; whether or not it will have live plants; tank décor elements such as rocks and logs; and the overall impression or feel that the tank should have.

Some people have strong ideas before they get started as far as what fish they want to get and then the tank can be “built” around that. Others know that they want a heavily planted aquarium first and foremost, and the fish are secondary. Still others are basically clueless and want some ideas of where to start.

One type of aquarium design that has grown quite popular in recent years is the biotope tank. A biotope aquarium aims to replicate a particular geographic area within the confines of an aquarium. It is a miniature version, almost a model of a specific place in the world, complete with the native plants, fish, and landscaping of that place.

A well thought out biotope aquarium can be quite impressive. Many people choose to do a tank like this if they have a particular interest in a part of the world and want to learn more about it. The more one studies and learns about the native lands that they are recreating, the better the end result will be.

With that in mind, here are just a few ideas to get you started, knowing that the only real limitation to fish tank design is your imagination.

The Amazon – This is a very popular biotope option and when done properly can be absolutely stunning. Many of the most popular fish found at pet stores are native to the Amazon basin. The cardinal tetra, cory cat, hatchet fish, and ram cichlid are all Amazonian fish, as are many others including most common tetras. One of the other wonderful aspects of the Amazon biotope is the plants. There are many beautiful species of Amazon swordplants, as well as many other plants that offer variety in leave shape, size, and color. A piece or two of driftwood helps to complete the natural Amazon landscape. Slightly soft water with a pH around 7 is best for this type of tank.
African Cichlid Habitat – The central African Lakes Tanganyika and Malawi are home to the African cichlids, some of the most interesting fish that one can keep in a home aquarium. They are colorful, active, territorial, and full of personality. The biotope aquarium for these fish is one of somewhat stark appearance. The tank is all rocks and rock formations with many caves and hiding places. There are not plants in the tank as the fish will uproot them constantly. This biotope has rather hard and alkaline water just like the lakes.
Your Homeland – That’s right, many people don’t consider their own backyard for fish tank design ideas, but most people live close to some very interesting fish. In North America there are sunfish, shiners, darters, and dace that are quite colorful and active. Native plants and perhaps a crayfish – there are a lot of options. One thing to look into before you just head out and collect whatever you can catch, is to check out your local laws on what can and cannot be kept. Usually the state fisheries department is the best place to turn for legalities as well as ideas for fish to keep.

Biotope aquariums can be an exciting challenge for the fish tank hobbyist and are a great opportunity to learn more about a specific area. When done well, the biotope tank can be one of the most impressive home fish tank designs that you can set up.
